You have so much on your plate but I do absolutely love it when you have time for a BC History post. The fun we could have teaching BC history properly to college students if only we had a few extra lifetimes.

I love your deep dives into BC history. It reminds me of reading Bruce Hutchinson's The Far Side of the Street almost 50 years ago - a book about politics of course, but my lasting impression was his love of BC and his Victoria gardens. It deepened my understanding of western Canada, about which I knew very little at the time. Last year I bought and read your book the Last Great Sea as homework before a trip to Haida Gwaii. I learned so much from it, about salmon and the forests, the people and the rich history. I have shared it with some BC folk.

Terry, I love your little historical gems.

I think we should peacefully re-claim San Juan Island. What flag should we plant? The HBC flag?

Oh Terry. Now that you are on it, could you continue your harangue on the annexation of the Alaska panhandle that rightly belongs to BC and to Canada?

Stop by the Makah Cultural and Research Center in Neah Bay and see what the current opinions of the traditional native slave trade are. John Robson spoke of a "face splitter" club for ceremonial killings on a visit a few years ago.

Apparently we have the Mexican resistance to the seizing of Texas at the same time to thank for distracting Polk from his intention to annex all BC up to the Russian border. Kaiser Wilhelm l gave US the San Juan Islands with a twisting convoluted marine boundary, ensuring your cell phone will switch to roaming on a US network on a ferry trip from Victoria to Tsawwassen. Oh well, should be grateful not to have had the 49th parallel extended across to Ucluelet, cutting off all ocean access from southern BC and the 1866 Bill to Annex Canada going into committee but never reporting out.

Great political cartoon on the Wikipedia entry. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/09/Ultimatum_on_the_Oregon_question_LCCN2008661460.jpg
