It is a strange confluence that has occurred between all these forces but their common theme is always anti-semitism. The only reason I can think of for this is how Jews call the lie on the professional victimology all these outfits depend on.

How on earth did the Syrians manage to glum onto this?

Andrew Griffith: good comment. Seems like the government is now completely in the hands of political staffers, all operating without any adult supervision.

I agree on the common theme of antisemitism. Recently read an interesting article in Tablet Magazine, which Media Bias Fact Check ranks as right-centre, but mostly factual with a high credibility rating. Very well-researched lots of references to peer-reviewed journal articles and books. The article is here: https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/history/articles/the-nazi-roots-of-islamist-hate

The Nazi Roots of Islamist Hate - A review of recent scholarship on the shaping of the modern Middle East in the aftermath of the Holocaust by Jeffrey Herf.

Big fan of Jeff Herf. Cited his work several times. Thanks for pointing this out.

Bill, you write "Seems like the government is now completely in the hands of political staffers."

I respectfully suggest that you amend that to read, "Seems like the government is now completely in the hands of political weasels." Of course, to compare political staffers to weasels is a disservice to that fine animal but, nevertheless .....

Good lord. I knew that the left/far-left had some serious problems with disinformation, conspiracy theories, anti-semitism & racism, and cuddling up to dictators, but I had no idea it was this bad. What is CAHN and (most of) the media doing about this? Asleep at the wheel?

Robyn Urback let 'em have it in today's G&M: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/article-ahmed-hussen-demands-to-know-how-someone-else-let-his-government . Mentioning her column only because Terry, being "away" (and, y'know, supposedly on holiday), might not have seen it. Hope you enjoyed/survived the Megler bridge. I crossed it years ago on a Suzuki 750, and I do recall the need for a pull-off to "unclench" afterwards : )

Thanks John. It was my misfortune to arrive at the Megler during bridgedeck road work. Stuck in traffic on the bridge for about 20 minutes. Not the most enjoyable experience.

Terry,

One of the things I learned while working on multiculturalism under the Conservatives and Jason Kenney. Check the social media posts of the organizations and people requesting G&C funding. The number of times that I and my team were caught out was embarrassing until we started to do the checking before political staffers. In some cases, they were overly ideological in their "vetting," in others they caught things that officials should have.

Unfortunately, complacency of officials under the Liberal government and general "ideological" alignment means that this critical review and thinking has been relatively lacking.

I'm so glad you included Laith Marouf in your post. When I read about him a couple of days ago I just couldn't believe who our federal government and various agencies gets involved with.

Enjoy your well deserved vacation.

Sandra, you write "... I just couldn't believe who are federal government and various agencies get involved with."

I respectfully suggest that if this is a surprise to you, you are seriously insufficiently cynical about the federal government of Canada.

Hi Ken, I appreciate all the feedback you give me. By nature I'm actually a very cynical person and increasingly about our federal government. But I have to admit they still shock me. In most companies even if it was a more junior person was responsible for vetting some thing or person, they would be fired or severely reprimanded for letting something like this happen.

Expand full comment

Sandra, I apologize for my tardiness in responding to your point; somehow I missed it previously.

I agree that in most companies, etc., etc. but in this government no senior person will lose their job, no one will be reprimanded, etc. In fact, I would forecast that the only thing that will happen is that they will express shock, horror that this could happen - already done, of course - and "investigate" how it happened - again, already done - but when I say, "already done" the words are done but there is no true shock or horror, there is no true investigation.

How could they be shocked or horrified when the top people themselves, very probably including the minister, have the same beliefs and how can they investigate their own failings when the decision to hire was deliberate and knowing? The only failings to which they would admit - privately, of course - is that they didn't hide the issue better.

As for being shocked by the federal government, I am simply disgusted at the duplicitous, moronic way in which they tell Canadians and the world how good and how virtuous they are and they then go about destroying Canadian citizens and this country. Truly, my cynicism and disgust has no bounds when it comes to this group of creeps.

You did a great job of explaining the situation. Thanks Ken.

The anti racism stuff is such nonsense. Fortunately most people know this. Unfortunately it continues to be pushed by lunatics that have somehow gotten into positions of power and or influence in government or media.

This story begs for more democratic day light. In particular how a federal institution can be openly hijacked at cross purposes to its mandated values. A visit before a parliamentary committee may be in order, however it would need to rise above dog whistling and partisan electioneering (not holding my breath). The political discourse around 'race' has become an ideological mine field for propagandists and opportunists amplifying the epistemological crisis and mistrust of democratic institutions. We need a believable open discussion not simply a site for manipulative disinformation and distortion by partisan ideologues. This story may present an occasion.

Robert, I apologize in advance for my cynicism - which I prefer to call "realism" - but I firmly believe that the federal government is embarrassed that they have been caught out; I also firmly believe that they don't really see any contradiction in the views that have been quoted and the aims of the governmental organization.

My cynicism actually knows no bounds when it comes to my (incredibly low) expectations of this government.

Expand full comment

Not to worry, but my point was meant to be in sympathy with what I understand Terry to be saying that it's more than a mere vetting mishap. Rather it appears to indicate a deeper hijacking or corruption of a democratic institution, whether that is through government complicity or not.

I doubt any of the parties want to dig deeper here, given the minefields noted, other than exploiting the superficial political opportunities. The government will likely simply apologize and try to shift the news cycle to something else. So I share your cynicism, however, I assume it applies to all the parties and it's the democratic public who will be ill-served as a result.

Expand full comment

Yes, my cynicism does apply to all parties.

Now, having said that, I find that those who just know, KNOW I TELL YOU, that they are doing [insert deity here]'s work or are promoting [insert save the planet / whales / blah / blah] are most corruptible. Because they KNOW that they are smarter than everyone else.

By contrast, those folks who are not trying to push a religious (including, of course, the green religion) or a massive cause are corruptible based on old lines of disaster: power, greed, lust, etc. That latter group I understand and can deal with most of the time. The former group just set my teeth on edge and cause me to want to find a violent psychopath to "deal with" that group. My very bad reaction there.

So, yes, I am an equal opportunity cynic but I am much more suspicious of those simply KNOW what is best for me, for the world, for all mankind. The other group: stupid folk, grifting folk, you know, ordinary idiots, malcontents, etc. that we have learned to deal with.

As for your comment that "The government will likely simply apologize ..." again, my cynicism but I absolutely expect that any such apology (and I agree they will apologize) will be faint, will not recognize the true stupidity of anyone, no one will lose a job over this insanity and the apology will not be sincere, not whatsoever.

Thank you, Terry for another excellent, informative piece of real journalism! That bridge is terrifying to cross in an automobile let alone on a motorcycle. I wish you a healthy heart rate and unsoiled underwear in your crossing(s). Have a wonderful vacation.

Terry, a great and compelling piece here. I particularly like the section on Laith Marouf, and your investigative research done so far. Note that Mr. Marouf is the CEO of Montreal Community and Independant Television, a TV channel which (I think) operates all over Quebec:

http://www.tele1.ca/index.php/fr/component/content/article/8-fr/21-notre-comite-de-coordination

I only did a brief look at www.tele1.ca , but apparently the TV station has a CRTC application to form a national TV network based on the Montreal programming. Further investigation is needed. Note further that this TV station and the Community Media Advocacy Centre still have Mr. Marouf in their employ.

These appointments and actions are no surprise to many and in fact is mostly expected from the Trudeau regime. Was it not Trudeau that gave away ten million taxpayer dollars to a man who killed an ally, while blinding another. Then Trudeau made sure to give him that money in a fashion that could not be intercepted by the families living with the actions of that man for killing and maiming their loved ones. After all, the Government is to protect all Canadian citizens and must stand up for all Canadian’s regardless of their crimes. Unless of course they have the audacity to protest in Ottawa, home of the Government and the laptop elite. Then it’s handcuffs and shackles and stopping those people from having access to their own bank accounts! How dare they! It must be an absolute shock to most Canadians that the Liberal Regime would appoint such a hateful person to manage hate. Same with those darn conspiracies folks, as we know the Government is on the up and up and would never harm any Canadians. The media would never mislead any either. It’s just more nut job conspiracies and misinformation and disinformation from the loony toons. Nothing to see here folks, not a thing to be alarmed about, it’s just Trudeau virtue signalling as always. He’s harmless after all and only has our best interests at heart.

It's like the Liberals are too dumb to realize the massive populist backlash they are risking. God help us.

Adam, I don't think it is that the Libs are too dumb to realize. Instead, they are of two beliefs: a) no one really looks at what they do; and b) the issues raised are being raised by "others" - that is, not by "good thinking" Liberals and therefore are to be disregarded as they alone (i.e. government) know what is "correct" and "best" for us.
