I have never commented on any site, but thought this would be a good time.
I had given up on reading a journalist writing just the facts and then there you are telling us all the truth about the residential schools, China and the rampant anti-semitism in our own government. So thank you and keep telling it as it is. Merry Christmas!
Hi Terry, I think more podcasts is a great idea. Those good conversations could also feed content to your newsletter and it’s quite enjoyable to listen to smart people converse.
Please don’t do a podcast. Enough of those are around already, and your strengths are research and writing in your own very special way. Keep up what you already do. The best of the season to you and your loved ones.
Make that four votes for a podcast, one against and a couple dozen no comment.
If the technology and the logistics were as simple as plugging it in and every week or two having a 20-minute conversation with a fellow journalist or a principal participant in some story I'm covering, I'd do it, because it wouldn't detract from the point of this newsletter. But things are never so simple! We'll see.
I opposed the podcast idea. I suppose interviews have their place. It's always useful to hear how long the pause is before the answer.
But serious news should be read. When you come across a challenging idea in print, you just naturally put down the book or the paper and -- whatever. Think it over. Grab a coffee. Leave it and come back another day. The reason that TV is the "idiot-box" is that you can't easily pause it; you end up accepting some dumb assertion because, before you've had time to really weigh it, the news has moved on to something else. (It occurs to me that lectures are like that too, which might be one of the ways "higher education" teaches people NOT to think.)
Hi Terry, I think some podcasts would be great! I really enjoy your articles! I hope for the New Year is the War in the Ukraine to end. I wish you the very Best of the New Year! Take care and sip that Redbreast!
I’m enjoying your Substack very much and a podcast would an excellent addition. There’s not many of you actually diving into the facts and relevant background on news stories so the more material the better.
#1, you can write any time you want, or don't want, your readers won't desert you. Don't feel obligated to keep to a schedule. #2, blogs to me go in one ear and out the other. You impressed me on a National Post blog this week but I can't remember what you said. There's no time to let it sink in. That being said, do whatever you want, your patrons will follow. #3, I really don't mind when you go off script and tell some history...go Maccabees indeed!

Hey. Love your writing and your wisdom. It’s marvellous. May 2023 be the dawning of a new age, where a few tyrants get knocked over.
Here's to that, Paul. Happy Christmas.

Whatever you decide, I know I will enjoy reading, regularity not as important as content, I love the idea of a podcast.
Enjoy the festive season, and the same good cheer and keep well to all your readers.
Bless yer heart, John. You were an early inspiration for this.

Thanks! Just plain luck. I think it's the reflection in the windows that did it.
