Like many, I have friends and acquaintances that have 'leftist' views. They are good people in their day to day lives. Not specifically ideological. They're idealistic, decadently romantic in their desire for revolutionary change, and often ahistorical in their perspective. In light of the Hamas atrocities against the State of Israel and the Jewish people, I think these same people have been backed into an ideological corner by academics, activists, and political operatives, whereby the cost of saying what is true, and condemning these acts plainly, would extract a high social toll. Most people are cowardly for fear of being ostracized by their social and professional groups, so instead they are as likely to double down, equivocate, and attempt to show their 'progressive' bona fides. To do otherwise, to acknowledge the butchery, the rape, the indiscriminate disregard for life that Hamas and their enablers have shown, would demand they recognize they have aligned themselves with barbarity.
I guess I am asking the question, how do we buttress our social cohesion far away from the brutal reality of events in Israel? This concern pales in comparison to the matters Israel is facing, but defense of our civil society and the values its supposed to uphold needs to be attended to as well. Thank you, Terry, for your work.
It does take courage. In that vast subculture, taking one step outside the lines is to risk banishment. And that can be socially, emotionally and financially costly.
They need to understand a lot more History than they do and that’s not going to happen. People have busy lives so they think what their friends think, or what they see on TV.
In the Ottoman Empire, Jews were required at times to wear a yellow star, funny clothes and not allowed to sit on the same bench as a Muslim. The Grand Mufti of Jerusalem and Hitler were pals. Anti-Semitism goes back a long way. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
The clown prince trugrope announced 10 million of Canadian taxpayers money for humanitarian support in Israel and Gaza today.
In my view Israel should turn off the power water and food to Gaza
That will be a terrible thing to do. Hamas caused this justifiable reaction.
We will now hear suggestions that Hamas did not kill babies. We will hear that cutting off food and water to Gaza is genocide. Really ? And how will the Canadian clown prince deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza?

Israel should not stoop to the level of Hamas by denying Gazans water and food. Hamas was elected in 2007, and there has not been an election since. We don’t know what they think. I didn’t vote for Trudeau so shouldn’t be categorized as being responsible for his actions. Neither should all Gazans be responsible for Hamas’.
I was wondering how far back this illberal anti-semitism went. It certainly helps to explain why we are seeing so many heartless posts from left leaning union leaders and politicians. The Liberals and NDP have certainly been thoroughly hijacked. I don't think I'll ever be able to vote for them again.
On a slightly different note....It's one thing to witness pro-Palestinian gatherings from Muslims (I was heartbroken but, sadly, not overly surprised), it's quite another to witness it coming from University students who have lived a very privileged and safe existence. My contempt for their ignorance is almost palpable. They have no idea that Hamas also terrorizes the Palestinians (I am curious to know how much is genuine support vs terror of speaking out against them). Yasmine Mohammed wrote a very eloquent piece for Tablet (https://www.tabletmag.com/sections/israel-middle-east/articles/gaza-my-lost-home). I would say Hamas would treat the Palestinians as well as the Taliban treat the Afghans.
"The Liberals and NDP have certainly been thoroughly hijacked". Thoroughly, indeed. Mao's Little Red Book is their playbook. Not enough vitriol has been thrown at Jagmeet whom I believe is the one really running the show. This behavior is so typical of the NDP who can only lie and cheat their way into power and it certainly shows the lack of depth on the liberals part. Whatever will the "lefties" do when they rant about how far right the conservatives are when the real totalitarians are standing right in front of them? The conservatives are looking pretty moderate and don't forget that they were not the ones hijacked. We need to get over "left" and "right" labels which do not apply anymore, as either can become authoritarian. We need to look at their behaviors and vote according to merit.

Don't be so pessimistic, Terry. Surely if Justin resurrects those poetry readings for ISIS terrorists, and repurposes them for Hamas terrorists, everything will be fine in the end.
As you say, today's events were set in motion many years ago. Is it that a festering problem not resolved yielded this bitter fruit? I don't know but I see hope in that the Irish terrorizing problems that ruled for many years has the appearance of being peacefully resolved. Is it because wiser heads have prevailed?
You may recall that several years ago, a mathematician named Auman, an American who immigrated to Israel received or shared a Nobel prize for his contributions to Game Theory. He offered up that it would take about 100 years for Israeli and Palestine to make peace. Noting that Israel is now 75 years old, I suspect that the Good Friday Agreement was signed after roughly 100 years of sectarian violence between Irish Catholic Republicans and Protestant Ulstermen.
I’m surprised and saddened by the support for savage terrorists in the West. One thing I’ve noticed is the almost absolute suppression of the horrific videos out of Israel. One thing you can be sure of though is that once the IDF moves into Gaza, the images of civilian suffering will be all over the MSM news. How the hell did we get here?

Take your breaks when you can. You are doing important work. I pray for your protection.
I’m going to cling to your optimistic take on this like a life raft Terry. I do so hope you’re right. Thanks for your hard work.
Hands down, you’re best writer I subscribe to & THE most worthwhile.
He sure is! So glad to have subscribed.

This is so timely and compelling! Thanks so much for this.

War is hell
War is wrong
Hamas started this war.
Israel will end it.
I stand with Israel

That's like saying the allies should have provided food and aid to Germany during WW2 because all Germans were not Nazis.

Now that you’re learning about discrimination of the jewish people, look up how Canada treated them. There’s nothing to be proud of .
I know how Canada treated the Jewish refugee ship that tried to land here in 1939. We sent it back to Germany.
That’s just part of it. Learn how the Jewish people were 2nd. Class citizens long before that.

Very interesting. Thank you.
Thank you Terry. As a Canadian, happy to have subscribed to you! Keep fighting to good fight. I’m with you all the way!
You took me to task for “whisky” instead of “whiskey” a while back so let me turn the tables.
It’s Am Yisroel Chai.
Thank you, Terry, for everything you’re doing to shine a light on this disease.
I know. I feel silly. Dunno what made me make that mistake. Fixed immediately on being alerted to it.
Because of your support, I wouldn’t hesitate to call you a Righteous Gentile.
There’s absolutely no need for you to feel silly.
Thank you for your work!
Thank you Terry for all your hard work.

Interesting..
Both parties became EU members and suddenly the violence made even less sense.
Your voice is sorely needed in this country Terry—and deeply appreciated by this subscriber.
