Fine article, writes one atheist with phantom neural Catholicism to another.

A fine piece, Terry. My own phantom has been missing for some time but I remember its presence all the same. Hope you’re feeling better soon. We need ya.

It appears the world has forgotten Jimmy Lai. What sad state of affairs.

A fitting article for the occasion. I grew up very Catholic and I left that behind but it didn’t entirely leave me behind. I watched the movie Conclave after watching the pope’s funeral. Would that more could be like Cardinal Lawrence. Anyway, I feel oddly out of sorts, standing at a weird convergence of circumstances. You remind us of the importance of mercy — an uncomfortable and necessary reminder.

Mr. Glavin gives me hope, as our country is about to fail ...

There's a famous line/screed ... about democracy ... written long long ago ... associated with a minor pundit (of the day) whose name I cannot remember ...which basically says, "Every democracy contains ... within it ... the seeds of its own demise."

Canada today ... short-term governments convincing genuine/honest LILIV's to accept today's vote bribes ... financed by the the income-bite (taxing) their (future) kids' and grandkids' incomes!

It's obscene. Just to give the Failed Liberals (and their catamitish NDP lapdogs) another 4 years of absolute power ...

I think and suspect that ... after the inexplicable eastern Canada "vote" comes in ... Canada is gonna have existential issues.

Obscene is a polite way of putting it. The one issue that makes me the angriest is the absolute corruption of the Liberal regime media. Barton and CBC are utterly disgraceful but so are many of the others (CTV, Global etc). They have sold out Canadians for the money they’ve been bribed with. I can’t believe how easily manipulated many Canadians are. Canada is worse than Russia and China for propaganda.

Yes, there are even seats in play here in calgary, in opposition to all common sense.

A broken place, Canada

Thank you, Terry. You do a fine job of the really hard stuff. My sincere condolences to you and your Jewish cousins on the loss of your mother’s rebbe, and their father, Mordechai Feuerstein. I hope your hand is fully healed and that there will be cause(s), soon, for your heart to hurt less.

Thanks Terry. As the mom of someone with a serious brain disorder (which everyone insists on calling a mental health issue) I too am melancholy. If our successive governments had not closed all psychiatric hospitals which gave asylum in earlier wiser centuries to the very sick people among us, eleven people might still be alive.this weekend. My mind is tortured by the violent deaths of these innocent people, including a little five year old kid. When will we understand that there is nothing compassionate about letting people with untreated schizophrenia wander the streets and die of neglect or suicide? Or kill other innocent people? Or be beaten to death by nine cops? And Eby? After 13 years without Riverview, this month, he opens 10 beds! In a jail for gods sake. Ten.

Sorry I’m just so upset. I too thought pope Francis was very authentically Christian .

Very well said! Instead of cleaning up the hellish parts of places like Riverview, the various governments ultimately threw the residents/patients to the streets and the wolves.

Pope Francis was a good man, as you said, Terry. He had a kind smile and a twinkle in his eye which would endear him to most people.

But unlike your faith, my faith allows me to forgive others only after the latter has recognized the harm they did, and asked forgiveness from those they hurt or whose name they slandered.

So indeed, Pope Francis was known for his abundant humility and compassion. But for Jews, his compassion was carefully and sparingly measured out in half-full thimbles. He never felt the need for restraining his severe castigations towards the Jewish State or the Jewish nation. *

In his defence it can be claimed that he was no different from most popes. All the gushing about his progressiveness sounds hollow and banal. He was a conformist and a de-facto reactionary.

RIP.

The last paragraph of "Faith of Our Fathers" is particularly applicable these days. I think that article is my favourite since subscribing to Substack.
